Getting a German driving licence is not complicated. It is just explained badly – usually in German, usually in official language. Here is the short version.
The short version
Four things worth knowing first
The theory test is available in English
The official theory examination can be taken in English – and in ten other languages. It costs no extra and it is not a special favour; we simply state it when your test is registered.
Theory classes are held in German
The lessons themselves, and the practical test, are in German. If your German is still growing, say so early. We would rather plan more time than pretend it makes no difference.
You can start the paperwork today
A vision test at any optician, a nine-hour first aid course, a biometric photo and the application at the driving licence authority. None of this requires a driving school, and it is where most people lose weeks.
Automatic is a real option
You can learn on an automatic car and still end up with an unrestricted licence – the rule is called B197. See Automatik fahren (German).
Step by step
How it works
Vision test and first aid
An optician does the eye test in minutes. The first aid course takes one day, nine units of 45 minutes. Both are required before you can apply.
First aid courseApply at the authority
You apply for the licence at the Führerscheinstelle. They issue the examination order, valid for twelve months.
Theory lessons and theory test
Fourteen double lessons for a first licence, then the computer-based test at TÜV or DEKRA – in English if you want.
How the test worksDriving lessons and practical test
Your own lessons plus twelve mandatory special drives: five overland, four motorway, three at night.

Exchanging a foreign licence
There is no honest way to answer this in a general text: the rules differ per country, and the deadline is short. Bring your licence and your registration certificate, and we will look it up with you.

Questions?
Just ask.
Tell us where you are from, what licence you hold and what you need it for. We will tell you honestly what is possible – and how much of it we can do in English.
